September 9, 2024 Dear Lorenzo De Zavala Middle School Parents, I want to take a moment to inform you about two incidents that took place today at our campus, and to reassure you that the safety and well-being of our students remains our top priority. In the first incident, a student was found in possession of a butterfly knife, which they brought to school to show off to their peers. The student did not threaten anyone, and a teacher immediately witnessed the situation. The matter has been addressed swiftly and appropriately through our administrative procedures. The second incident involved the circulation of social media threats, which have been affecting multiple schools and school districts across the Rio Grande Valley. These are not new threats but are related to the messages that have been circulating online in recent days. Please rest assured that there is no immediate threat to our campus, and we are actively monitoring the situation, along with increased patrols for added safety. We understand that these events can cause concern, but please know that we are committed to maintaining a secure learning environment. We encourage you to speak with your children about the importance of reporting any safety concerns directly to school staff rather than sharing them on social media. We will continue to keep you updated if necessary. En el primer incidente, se encontró a un estudiante en posesión de un cuchillo mariposa, que trajo a la escuela para presumir ante sus compañeros. El estudiante no amenazó a nadie y un maestro presenció la situación de inmediato. El asunto se ha abordado de manera rápida y apropiada a través de nuestros procedimientos administrativos. El segundo incidente involucró la circulación de amenazas en las redes sociales, que han estado afectando a varias escuelas y distritos escolares en todo el Valle del Río Grande. Estas no son amenazas nuevas, sino que están relacionadas con los mensajes que han estado circulando en línea en los últimos días. Tenga la seguridad de que no existe una amenaza inmediata para nuestro campus y estamos monitoreando activamente la situación, junto con un aumento de las patrullas para mayor seguridad. Dear Parents/Guardians, La Joya ISD is aware of threatening messages circulating on social media, targeting several schools in the Rio Grande Valley. Please know that the well-being of our school community remains our top priority, and we take all threats seriously. While an arrest has been made in another school district in connection with these threats, we want to assure you that we are closely monitoring the situation. At this time our campus administrators and police force have diligently followed up on potential threats posed at La Joya ISD campuses and will continue to keep campus communities updated. We have increased patrols in and around our campuses to ensure the continued safety of our students and staff as a further precaution. We also ask that you take this opportunity to talk with your children about the importance of not forwarding any threatening messages. Instead, they should report these threats immediately to a campus administrator. Please be aware that anyone responsible for making or circulating threats will face serious legal and administrative consequences. College, Career, and Military Readiness Sep. 3-6, 2024!

Today, our volleyball team showed what it means to be a true community. They noticed our school bus driver sitting alone at lunch and asked if they could join him. It was a simple gesture, but it made his day. Through teary eyes, he thanked the girls and expressed that this was the first time any team had joined him for an after game meal. Sometimes, it’s the smallest acts that make the biggest difference. We are so very proud of our girls not only for showing great improvements on the court, but for reminding us all of the power of reaching out and showing compassion.
